Job Description
Are you a visionary data leader ready to drive transformation at scale? ALSAC, the fundraising and awareness organization for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, is seeking a Director of Data Engineering to architect and lead our cloud-native data ecosystem. This is a high-impact role where you'll blend strategic leadership with hands-on technical expertise to deliver scalable, secure, and innovative data solutions that power mission-critical decisions.
What You’ll Do
- Lead the Data Engineering Strategy: Design and execute a forward-thinking data engineering roadmap aligned with enterprise goals and digital transformation initiatives.
- Build Cloud-Native Solutions: Architect and optimize data platforms using AWS services (Redshift, Glue, Lambda, Athena, S3, DMS, etc.) and modern tools (dbt, Airflow, Spark, Kafka).
- Drive Innovation & Operational Excellence: Champion automation, CI/CD, and DevOps practices to streamline data delivery and ensure high-quality engineering.
- Empower Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with teams across marketing, finance, supply chain, and customer experience to deliver data products that drive personalization, campaign optimization, and business insights.
- Mentor & Grow Talent: Lead a high-performing team of data engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning, innovation, and career development.
- Advance Data Governance & Self-Service: Enable robust data governance while empowering business users with self-service analytics capabilities.
- Modernize Legacy Systems: Lead cloud migration efforts from on-premise systems (e.g., SQL Server) to AWS, ensuring seamless transitions and scalable architectures.
- Stay Ahead of the Curve: Research emerging technologies and trends to continuously evolve ALSAC’s data capabilities and maintain a competitive edge.
What You Bring
- 7–8+ years of experience in data engineering, preferably in retail, consumer goods, or tech-driven environments.
- 5+ years of direct people management experience, with a proven ability to build and lead high-performing teams.
- Deep expertise in AWS cloud services and tools such as Redshift Serverless, Glue Studio/DataBrew, Lambda, DMS, CloudWatch, and IAM.
- Strong knowledge of API integration and ETL/ELT processes using tools like Mulesoft, PySpark, SSIS, and Confluent.
- Experience with big data tools (Kafka, Spark), workflow orchestration (Airflow, Luigi), and DevOps practices (CI/CD, Liquibase, BitBucket).
- Familiarity with data lake ecosystems, stream-processing systems, and object-oriented scripting languages (Python, Scala, Java).
- Proven success in data modernization initiatives, cloud migrations, and building enterprise data platforms.
- Strong business acumen and ability to translate complex technical concepts into actionable insights for non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience with data governance frameworks, security best practices, and compliance standards.
- Experience with tools like Databricks, Snowflake, Power BI, and SageMaker.
