Job Description

The Insights function uses deep knowledge to drive brand and insights strategies to help people fall in love with our mission: Finding cures. Saving children.® The Senior Director is responsible for leading, developing and innovating on strategies and initiatives in coordination with the Chief Audience & Insights Officer and the Chief Marketing and Brand Officer based on ALSAC’s strategic vision for St. Jude to be the most iconic nonprofit in the world and achieve an Insights-led strategy.

Responsible for overseeing strategic functions led by multiple directors in the following disciplines: 1) Research: inclusive of brand health, deep insights knowledge, and messaging & creative effectiveness; 2) Experience and User Journey Research: inclusive of researching deep donor insights, creation of donor journey maps, deep experience insights; 3) Insights: inclusive of developing deep Insights understanding for use in go to market strategies.

Executes the strategic planning, development and administration of activities to advance organization goals, while communicating effectively with internal and external stakeholders. Responsible for managing the development, planning, and implementation of all activities within assigned area.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

1. Strategically leads functions led by multiple directors in the following disciplines to ensure execution alignment and drive results: brand/market research, donor experience research, insights. Collaborates closely with other senior leadership within Marketing, Development and Operations to ensure insights are aligned with key organizational priorities and tied directly to brand, engagement, revenue and retention goals. Develops and implements strategies to ensure that ALSAC meets its critical goals and supports overall business objectives in the most effective and efficient manner possible.

2. Directs the teams’ agenda, focus, and roadmaps aligning with the Chief Audience & Insights Officer and ALSAC’s Strategic Plan. Develop and oversee the implementation of both short and long-term marketing strategic planning -- translating broad goals into achievable steps. Develop a rhythm of the business to maximize productivity across teams and individuals.

3. Oversees the Research & Insights team responsible for informing and validating strategic business decisions across brand health, insights, messaging & creative effectiveness and exploratory research value streams. Expertise in direct management of a community research panel. Oversees the use of quantitative and qualitative methods in addition to advanced analytics / data science techniques to derive key drivers, data correlations and models. Oversees development and actionability of proprietary brand scorecards across multiple categories.

4. Oversees the Experience Research and Insights team responsible for conducting first party and third-party research to better understand supporter experiences, need states and problem statements to inform better experiences. Additionally responsible to recommend optimal supporter experiences and journey maps based on supporter research and insights.
5. Understands and leverages each team member’s strengths, competence and commitment to help them fully understand and reach their expected contribution & responsibility. Ensures all team members have a learning roadmap and are high performing contributors. Provides training opportunities for team members as part of succession planning. Works collaboratively with other Marketing Division leadership to identify and implement cross-training opportunities for self and team members. Ensures team is consistently aligned with the strategic plan and organizational priorities and policies. Manages and leads direct reports. Actively participates in the resourcing & management of the team. Willingly and effectively coaches and counsels others. Works with Employee Experience to address any personnel issues. Demonstrates by example the values and culture pillars of the organization.

6. Oversees the functional budgeting process and operates within established budgetary parameters. Ensures a process to identify and vet agency partners. Makes strategic recommendations on selection of agencies based on proposals, background information, and industry knowledge. Oversees negotiations and holds agencies accountable to statements of work.

  • Requires a Bachelor's Degree in Marketing, Psychology or related field; Master's Degree preferred and 10 years of practical experience; inclusive of 3 years managing people.
  • At-scale Financial Institution experience strongly desired
  • Management consulting, or experience as a business leader tasked to drive value preferred
  • Highly analytical, quantitative thinker
  • Innovative and always looking to improve everything they touch
  • Requires expert knowledge and proficiency in audience strategy and brand research within the non-profit and for-profit industry.
  • Requires an advance understanding of market research, both quantitative and qualitative methods, and statistical analysis.
  • Requires a deep understanding of modern marketing.
  • Demonstrates strong working knowledge of various Martech platforms
  • Demonstrated ability to drive change while being comfortable with ambiguity; willingness to invest multiple years to a transformation effort
  • Proven success recruiting, inspiring, developing, coaching and motivating team members through balanced leadership with a focus on team member engagement and performance management
  • Proven and demonstrated leadership skills including relationship building, collaborating with clear ability to influence, gain buy-in, and negotiate with a diverse group of business partners/stakeholders including senior management.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage effectively in a heavily matrixed organization with a high degree of initiative and strong ability to meet key responsibilities with limited oversight.
  • Proven ability to communicate well verbally and in writing with internal and external stakeholders of different levels, including experience presenting to senior executives with the ability to simplify complex information in a clear manner.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to participate effectively in a team environment and works well with a variety of others.
  • Agency relationship and budget management
