Job Description

As the Benefits Administrator, you will be responsible for the day-to-day administration of ALSAC’s comprehensive benefit programs including a focus on either health and welfare programs such as medical, pharmacy vision, dental, FSA, STD, LTD, EAP, AD&D, wellness and more. Communicates and manages the activities of a full range of external service providers, such as: benefit plan consultants, legal advisors, insurers, and administrators regarding benefit policies, eligibility and coverage issues, and enrollment procedures. Responsible for analyzing employee benefit programs and plan designs to ensure they are competitive and compliant in the market.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

1. Oversee the primary day-to-day administration health and welfare benefits plans. Provide backup support, including secondary coverage for day-to-day administration to other benefit programs and team members as needed. Manages the assigned benefit plans to ensure the plans operate in accordance with the plan documents and vendor service agreements and assists in resolving issues.

2. Handle benefit inquiries and issues to ensure quick, equitable, courteous resolution. Maintain connection/relationship with benefit vendors, administrators, consultants, employees, and beneficiaries to facilitate proper and complete utilization of benefits.

3. Responsible for benefits-related compliance and perform needed activities associated to complying with federal, state and local regulations related to benefits including, but not limited to COBRA, ERISA, HIPAA, ACA, 5500s, SAR, Summary of Material Modifications, etc.

4. Responsible for the reconciliation process and requests for payment of assigned benefit-related invoices and plan funding (medical, dental, vision, short-term disability, group life insurance, AD&D, COBRA administration, FSA administration, tuition assistance and others) on a scheduled basis and in a timely manner. When necessary, research and resolve administrative issues and coordinate corrections with all related parties.

5. Manages the preparation and execution of benefit documentation (e.g. original and amended plan texts, benefit agreements, plan documents, summary plan descriptions, etc.).

6. Maintains employee benefits data in the human resources information system and coordinates the transfer of data to external vendors, plan providers, auditors and consultants.

7. Liaise with all brokers, advisors, consultants and vendors for health and welfare plans as it relates to benefits administration.

8. Prepares and communicates information to employees and former employees about benefits programs, procedures, changes, and government-mandated disclosures.

9. Work collaboratively with other functional areas (i.e., IT and payroll) to ensure benefits goals are met and projects/changes are implemented smoothly.

10. Participates in research and uses data metrics and analytics to ensure market competitiveness as well as identify efficiencies and cost controls.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field and a minimum of 4 or more years’ experience administering benefit plans.
  • Requires comprehensive knowledge of health and welfare and retirement benefits and applicable federal, state and local laws, including ERISA, COBRA, HIPAA and ACA, design, funding and tax issues.
  • Experience with retirement administration and programs is a plus.
  • Strong problem solving skills, including the ability to effectively address any issue in collaboration with others as appropriate; ability to proactively identify and prevent potential problems.
  • Ability to develop and propose strategic initiatives.
  • Ability to analyze benefits data (i.e. financial, statistical). Experience using HRIS, Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.
  • Demonstrable exceptional communication (verbal and written) skills – exceptional listening and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven leadership in overseeing projects including working with outsourced vendors and monitoring vendor activities as well as the ability to manage details through to completion and ensure project deadlines are met.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and effectively handle concurrent demands and prioritize responsibilities.
