About the Job: The Network Engineer I supports the organization's network infrastructure by monitoring performance, troubleshooting connectivity issues, maintaining network devices, and assisting with branch office support. This role serves as an initial point of contact for network incidents, works with service providers and senior engineers to resolve issues, and maintains network documentation and asset records.
The ideal candidate possesses foundational networking knowledge, strong troubleshooting skills, excellent customer service abilities, and a desire to grow into more advanced network engineering responsibilities. A degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Telecommunications, or a related field, along with industry certifications such as Network+, Security+, or CCNA, is highly desirable.
Key Responsibilities
- Incident Management: Serve as the first point of contact for network issues, picking up tickets, and performing basic 1st/2nd line troubleshooting.
- Network Monitoring: Monitor systems for outages, link failures, or performance bottlenecks using monitoring tools, and respond to automated system alerts.
- Device Configuration: Assist in the installation, configuration, and routine maintenance of network hardware such as routers, AP’s, switches, VPNs, and firewalls.
- Remote Offices or Branch Administration: Manage the relationship between remote branches and the telecom managed service provider. Assisting in troubleshooting and configuration of remote branches. Escalate between provider and senior network engineering.
- Documentation & Asset Management: Maintain accurate records of network topology, equipment inventory, and update troubleshooting runbooks or standard operating procedures.
- Escalation: Identify complex network issues and seamlessly escalate them to senior network engineers.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Education: Typically requires a bachelor’s or associate degree in computer science, Information Technology, Telecommunications, or a closely related engineering field.
- Experience: 0–2 years of hands-on experience or relevant IT networking/troubleshooting exposure.
- Certifications: Earning foundational certifications like Network+, Security+, or equivalent. Higher level certificates like Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) a plus.
- Fundamental Knowledge: A strong understanding of networking principles, including the OSI model, TCP/IP, routing protocols (e.g., OSPF, BGP), VLANs, and switching.
