Position Overview – Barnhart is establishing a dedicated internal communications function to strengthen culture, improve employee engagement, and drive clarity and alignment across a growing, distributed workforce. The Director of Internal Communications & Media will design and lead enterprise-wide internal communications strategies that connect employees to Barnhart’s mission, values, and operational priorities.

This role will serve as a trusted advisor to senior leadership, overseeing internal communication channels and guiding the development of written and multimedia content that supports communications, training, and knowledge-sharing initiatives across the organization.

Location – This role is based at our Service Center in Memphis, TN. Candidates must reside in the Memphis area or be willing to relocate prior to employment. Limited travel to branch locations may be required.

Key Responsibilities –

Strategic Leadership

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive internal communications strategy aligned with business objectives, company culture, and operational priorities.
  • Establish communication standards, governance, and approval processes to ensure consistency, clarity, and effectiveness.
  • Serve as a primary advisor to senior leadership on messaging, change management, and enterprise communications strategy.
  • Provide strategic direction for the development and use of multimedia content in support of internal communications and training needs.

Content & Channel Management

  • Oversee all internal communication platforms, including intranet, email, video, digital signage, and emerging collaboration tools.
  • Guide the creation of compelling content—both written and multimedia—that informs, engages, and reinforces Barnhart’s values, priorities, and safety-first culture.
  • Own the enterprise communications calendar and editorial planning process, ensuring alignment across functions and locations.
  • Partner with internal media resources to support video content, visual storytelling, and graphic assets used for communications, leadership messaging, and training support.

Executive & Leadership Support

  • Draft and edit CEO and executive communications, including speeches, scripts, and message briefs.
  • Develop communication toolkits (FAQs, talking points, key messages) to enable leaders to cascade information effectively.
  • Coach executives on tone, timing, and delivery for sensitive, high-impact, or change-related communications.

Employee Engagement

  • Design initiatives that promote cultural cohesion and engagement across branches and job sites.
  • Leverage storytelling, visuals, and multimedia content to strengthen connection and understanding across a distributed workforce.
  • Partner with HR, Training, and Operations to support onboarding, safety communications, and enterprise change initiatives.

Measurement & Continuous Improvement

  • Define and track KPIs for communication effectiveness, including channel adoption, engagement metrics, and content performance.
  • Analyze data and feedback to continuously refine communication strategies and content impact.
  • Conduct regular reviews and present insights and recommendations to senior leadership.

Qualifications –

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Media, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred)

Experience

  • 8+ years of experience in internal communications or related disciplines.
  • Proven success supporting multi-location or distributed workforce environments.
  • Experience guiding or overseeing creative and multimedia efforts (e.g., video, visual content, digital storytelling) in a strategic leadership capacity; hands-on production experience not required.

Skills

  • Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling abilities.
  • Strong strategic and project management skills.
  • Comfort partnering with media, creative, or production resources to deliver effective communication assets.
  • Data-driven approach to communication planning and performance evaluation.
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills, including partnership with training and operational teams.
